Orthopedic Immunobiologics: All of Your Questions Answered
Wondering what immunobiologics is? Read on to find out about this groundbreaking field pioneered by Dr. Austin Yeargan.

Orthopedic immunobiologics is a mouthful to say, but if you find a doctor who specializes in this type of treatment, it just might improve your health so much you’ll wonder why you didn’t discover it sooner.

Dr. Austin Yeargan of Carolina Joint and Arthritis is a pioneer in this advanced field. The ultimate goal of this kind of regenerative medicine is to harness the power of the human body to heal itself by directing that power specifically toward the areas of your body that hurt.

Here are answers to a few of the most common questions we are consistently asked about this  treatment.

What is orthopedic immunobiologics?

When you suffer from an injury or degenerative disease, your body is designed to protect and heal itself. It stimulates a response that includes summoning healing cells to the injury site. These cells are packed with growth factors that are naturally anti-inflammatory and start the healing process.

To make use of this power, we harvest useful biological cells and proteins from your own body and use them to treat your painful issue, whether it’s a sports injury or a chronic condition such as arthritis.

The goal is to activate your healing pathways to preserve your joints and provide pain relief.

What procedures are included?

Depending on the patient’s individual situation, we offer several different treatments. Nanoplasty® and Mechanical Axis Deviation Procedure (NAMAD) are used to treat osteoarthritis in your knee. This procedure includes several steps:

  • Prolotherapy: An irritant is injected into the injury site to jump-start your body’s healing process.
  • Hyaluronic acid injection (viscosupplementation): Hyaluronic acid is injected into your knee to replenish the fluid in it that lubricates and cushions your joints to keep them working smoothly.
  • Mechanical axis deviation: This is not an immunobiologic, but as part of this procedure, it helps your knee heal. It includes custom shoe inserts with heel wedges designed to align your knees and lower legs to relieve pressure on your knee.
  • PRP therapy: Platelet rich plasma therapy introduces a solution of concentrated platelets and growth factor concentrate into your knee to help the healing process.
  • ABMAC (Autologous bone marrow concentrate): We harvest your own stem cells from your bone marrow, mix them with growth factor concentrate, and inject the solution into the bone tissue that lies beneath the cartilage in your joint.

Will it work for me?

We use these regenerative treatments to help patients heal from joint pain, arthritis, and tendonitis in their knees and shoulders. While this can relieve pain and serve as an alternative to joint replacement, the only way to know for sure if this treatment will work for you is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Yeargan.
